Bone gaiwan

This small gaiwan may appear simplistic at first, but like a trusty chef’s knife, it’s built to perform without any distractions. Its clean bone-white surface reflects the tea soup’s true colors while its thin walls do double duty. On the one hand, they make this gaiwan so light that handling it will soon become second nature, and on the other hand, they dissipate heat quickly, which allows its user to brew aromatic teas with boiling water without any risk of stewing the leaves between steeps. This gaiwan will be the perfect companion for elegant solo sessions where the tea is the center of attention or, if bought in bulk, for parallel tea tastings. It’s also suited for two-person sessions, as it can comfortably fill two tasting cups.

Bone china vs. Jade porcelain

Jade porcelain (玉瓷, yu ci) is a refined, high-quality porcelain known for its smooth, dense texture and jade-like translucency. It is widely used for premium teaware due to its durability and lustrous finish.

Bone porcelain (骨瓷, gu ci), commonly referred to as bone china, represents the pinnacle of porcelain craftsmanship, reserved for the most exclusive teaware. This porcelain type is made by incorporating finely ground bone ash with kaolin and other materials, resulting in an exceptionally white, translucent, and strong porcelain. The bone ash component is what sets bone china apart, enhancing both its delicate appearance and durability. Due to its higher strength, bone china is often crafted into thinner-walled teaware, as seen in our Bone Gaiwan, which further enhances its elegance and translucency.
