Xinyang Maojian

 

Xinyang Maojian, a green tea from Henan, China, is often listed as one of China's 'Ten Famous Teas'! This one has the distinction of coming from a completely organic and pesticide-free farm.

With an undertone of sugarcane sweetness, the taste of the tea maintains a savoury quality, blending vegetal spinach and broccoli. Notes of water chestnut and sweet peas round out the flavour, while a finish of crisp pine lingers as a pleasant aftertaste.

Clean and fresh above all, this green tea reflects its natural growing conditions and pristine alpine climate! 

 

THE TEA FARM

High in the mountains of Xinyang, Henan, lies a unique, family-owned tea garden, which we had the pleasure of visiting this Spring. The lack of pesticides is obvious, as the garden shows a healthy biodiversity, tea bushes sharing space with fruit trees, weeds, bamboo, and other native plants. True pesticide-free farming is rare, so finding a farm like this is a treasure. 

 

 

Another aspect of this garden which makes it unique is its method of cultivation: This farm grows plants from seed rather than clonal cuttings, something that is less common with modern tea gardens. They are also fairly old for green-tea-producing plants: having being sown in the '50s and '60s, they are now more than half a century old!

Preparation
IN THE TEAPOT
  • Quantity: 6g / 500ml
  • Water temperature: 80°C
  • Infusion time: 3-4 min
GONGFU CHA METHOD
  • Quantity: 2g / 150ml
  • Water temperature: 80°C
  • 3 infusions: 60, 60, 90 sec

For best results brew in a tall glass and fill with water before adding the leaves. Too high water temperature would burn the leaves, and the tea will taste bitter and sour.
