Sesame Lotus Yixing Teapot

duanni

Large and lamplike, the design and colour of this Yixing teapot are immediately striking: rendered in sandy-yellow duanni ore, its profusion of ornamental details includes a squared handle and angled spout, petal motifs ringing the body, and botanic ones around the knob sitting on the dais-like lid. It may be no surprise, therefore, that its shape is novel one, invented by a Yixing artist. Its medium-size, wide design, and large mouth accommodate unfurling leaves as well as their removal, and though this makes it easy to introduce long, unbroken sheng pu’er or white tea leaves, its dense material doesn’t much alter the tea’s flavour, so it is suitable for any type of tea.

The clay

This Yixing teapot is made of Qing Zhima Duanni (青芝麻段泥) clay of the highest quality, a green-yellow ore extracted from a mine in the Yellow Dragon Mountain (Huanglong shan, 黄龙山). Zhima, meaning 'sesame', refers to the black grains studding the yellow clay, resembling ground sesame.

The clay was mined in 2002, then refined in 2004, and subsequently aged for thirteen years before the pot was produced. Duanni of this quality is extremely rare and will satisfy in full even the most demanding Gongfu Cha lover.

Why do I need a Yixing teapot?

The material and the shape of Yixing teapots are ideal for brewing tea. They bring out the tea flavour like no other tea vessel. Hand-made Yixing teapots are also valuable handicrafts sought after by collectors. Their value raises with time, usage, and artist popularity.

Yixing teapots are made of a rare and depleting clay mined in the mountains near Yixing, a city in the Jiangsu province. The high density yet porous nature of the clay absorbs the smell of the tea brewed in it. For this reason, it is advised to use the pot with only one kind of tea (for instance with black teas or green teas). Bring your tea to the next level; allow yourself an authentic Yixing teapot.
