Humble Cup

It sits quietly upon the table like the most patient of pupils; picking it up, one immediately gets the sense that this small and almost inconspicuous cup was crafted with attention and finesse by skilled hands. The delicate imperfections in its form, the cloudy white crackle glaze sprinkled just so, the rim dipped bark-brown, all speak to the care of the maker. It seems only to ask for the same respect as it sits in the hands of its user. But very humbly.

Produced in the 'ceramic capital' of Chaozhou, this cup is ideal for use in the Chinese gongfu style of enjoying tea, and pairs well with an equally beautiful gaiwan.

Why is the cup so small?

This cup is designed for the traditional Chinese tea preparation (gong fu cha). The tea is steeped for a short time in a small teapot and served in the tiny cups (cha bei).

The same leaves are infused multiple times, and the flavour changes with each infusion. This procedure maximises the aroma of the tea, revealing the subtle nuances.
