Reduction burning
Black hat Jian Shui Teapot
Compact and efficient, this small Jian Shui teapot is designed for precision pouring. Its thick clay walls retain heat beautifully, while the carefully crafted spout ensures a fast, smooth pour—perfect for gongfu-style brewing. The snug lid and ergonomic handle enhance control, making each infusion effortless and refined.
The lid resembles a hat, adding a unique charm to its design. Beyond aesthetics, the teapot’s wide opening allows for easy filling and accommodates even large tea leaves, making it a versatile choice for various tea types.
The deep black finish is achieved through reduction firing, a technique that enriches the clay’s natural luster and gives the teapot its striking, understated elegance. A perfect companion for tea lovers who appreciate both function and beauty.
If you like this design but prefer a different color, check out the non-reduction-fired version, which highlights the natural hues of Jian Shui clay.

Why do I need a Jian Shui teapot?
A Jian Shui teapot is a great choice for tea lovers who appreciate versatility. Unlike Yixing teapots, which are more porous and absorb tea flavors over time, Jian Shui clay is high in iron and fired at higher temperatures, making it denser. This means that it doesn’t retain flavors as much, and we find that it preserves the tea’s original character while subtly softening the water and creating a thicker mouthfeel.
If you enjoy switching between different teas while still benefiting from the clay’s heat retention and smooth pour, a Jian Shui teapot is a perfect fit. Should you prefer matching your teapots to a specific tea type, we recommend Jian Shui for Shu Pu'Er and other Hei Chas. It also complements other bold teas, including many black teas and all types of aged teas.
