Foshou Midnight Gaiwan

This midnight-black ceramic gaiwan by Zhang Xue combines simplicity with thoughtful design. Its smooth, matte glaze gives it a modern, understated look, while the flared rim ensures easy pouring. The standout feature is the lid’s knob, shaped like a Buddha’s Hand citrus (Foshou). This symbolic fruit, revered in Chinese culture for its association with blessings, longevity, and harmony, is rendered in a rich, golden hue, creating a striking contrast against the dark body of the gaiwan. Each textured detail of the fruit has been meticulously sculpted, evoking a sense of organic elegance.

Whether used for brewing fine teas or displayed as a statement piece, this is a testament to the beauty of mindful craftsmanship.

About the artist

We encountered Zhang Xue through her work, a pair of gaiwans that left an impression while visiting Jingdezhen, and through a mutual contact have finally been able to obtain some of the very same pieces for our shop. Zhang Xue opened her own studio in Jingdezhen in 2011, soon after having completed her studies, and has since exhibited her work in Yunnan, Hangzhou, Jingdezhen, and Shanghai. The Foshou teaware is part of a series with emblems representing the ingredients of the Qianlong Emperor's favorite tisane, which he immortalized in poetry: Buddha's hand citrus, pignoli, and plum blossom, made with boiled water from fresh snow.
